The English Department in the school has a proud tradition of hosting legendary weekly house debates on controversial and topical issues. These debates help our students to see the power of deploying rational, reasoned arguments and compelling evidence in action. The new Junior Cycle English curriculum places particular emphasis on oral literacy and incorporates an oral presentation which is assessed in 2nd year. Debating enables students to speak publicly in order to argue their point of view. Beyond examinations, the debates help to instil a great sense of poise and self-confidence. It teaches them the skills of researching, organizing, and presenting information in a compelling fashion. The debating society is lively, fun and one of the few places in the school where arguments are positively encouraged!!!
