Sport plays a very important role in the lives of Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré students. Enormous efforts are made to introduce students to as many sport and leisure activities as possible. Student participation is encouraged at every step. As students progress through the school, they gain an appreciation of sport and the many benefits it brings to their lives. As well as the obvious physical and mental-health benefits that accrue, students become more confident and learn to appreciate the sense of belonging that participating in a team brings.
While the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment, regardless of ability, there is also an extremely competitive side to sport, which brings its own highs and lows. Over the years, our students, boys and girls, have achieved enormous sporting successes, with All-Ireland wins in hurling, camogie and badminton, as well as individual triumphs in the world of Athletics in both track and field. Win or lose, we encourage students to enjoy themselves and aim to help them fulfil their boundless potential to be the very best that they can be. With three dedicated Physical Education teachers and numerous committed, volunteer teacher-coaches and parents, we have a fantastic team to drive our sporting programme forward.
Allied to this we have extensive and expanding facilities to continue this great sports tradition. The full sized gymnasium is equipped to the highest modern standards and facilitates an advanced and varied Physical Education programme. It also provides a much needed recreational facility for the town of Roscrea. Outside, the hurling ball wall is in constant use and helps our students hone and refine their skills while the playing fields facilitate the playing of traditional field sports and an extensive range of recreational games. Tennis and basketball courts complete the facilities on the school grounds but our sporting vision stretches far beyond the school gate. Students are afforded the opportunity to take part in: sailing, canoeing, kayaking, abseiling, rock-climbing, and equestrian sports at various stages of their school journey. Golf competitions are held at regular intervals throughout the year. Both inside and outside the gates of Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré we demonstrate our enduring passion for sport and pride in the wellbeing of our students.
