East Munster Schools Athletics Championships
The East Munster Schools Athletics Championships took place on May 1st in Templemore, Co. Tipperary, and proved to be a resounding success. The event highlighted the athletic talent and sportsmanship of students from schools across the county. It was a well-organized day, with a lively atmosphere that inspired both enthusiastic participation and competitive spirit.
Students from CPR took part in a wide range of track and field events, including sprints, hurdles, long jump, shot put, and relay races. The standard of competition was high, with only 2 athletes progressing to the Munster Championships in the laned events this year.
The day began with a strong performance from Orlaith Ryan in the Minor Shot Put, where she competed impressively in a tightly contested event. Aoife Moore delivered a great run in the 75m hurdles, making it to the final. Sorcha Phelan and Halle Shanahan both advanced from the heats in the 100m but were just edged out in the semi-finals. Well done also to Libby Dynan and Hayley Moore who competed in the junior and senior 100m respectively. In the junior long jump, Jasmine Murphy and Alicia England competed with promise—both newcomers to the event, they showed great potential for future competitions.
The relay events brought plenty of excitement, with teams racing hard for top times, as qualification was based on the fastest results. Both CPR relay teams showed excellent coordination, clean baton changes within the zones, and strong performances overall. The Minor girls team included Halle Shanahan, Sorcha Phelan, Orlaith Ryan, and Kyla Ryan, while the Junior team was made up of Caoimhe Ryan, Kayleigh Delaney, Kaela Cramptom, and Aoife Moore.
A standout of the day was Marie Shanahan, who delivered exceptional performances in the Intermediate field events. She threw a superb 32.95m to claim first place in the discus, and an impressive 38m in the hammer throw to secure second. Congratulations to Marie, who has qualified for the Munster Finals in both events, to be held at MTU Cork on Saturday, May 17th.
Glorious sunshine and smooth event management helped make the day a memorable one. Huge thanks go to the teachers, coaches, volunteers and Templemore AC whose hard work made it all possible. Thanks to Ms. Cleary and Ms. Larkin for accompanying and supporting the athletes on the day.
