Gaa Future Leaders 3rd and 4th Class Primary school Blitz

On Thursday the 1st of May our TY Future Leaders class hosted 2 hurling/camogie blitzes for 3rd and 4th class students in our local area. This blitz was the culminating event for our TY Future Leaders class and they had put significant time into the planning and organizing of what was a great event. With the weather on our side, a great day was had by the schools who attended. Thanks to Corville N.S., Dromakeenan N.S. and Scoil Eoin Naofa for attending.

The structure of the day was as follows. All players undertook a warmup led by Calum Mitchell, which showed just how energetic the day was going to be. All players were then divided into 8 mixed teams and assigned a team coach/manager from Our Future Leaders class. The coaches did an excellent job of getting all the players involved, having fun and developing their skills. We also appointed 4 referees from our class who ensured fair matches that encouraged everyone on the pitch. Our Chairperson, Emily Whyte and secretary Aaron O Toole were in control of timing and logistics on the day and ensured all aspects of the event ran smoothly. Overall, it was a remarkably successful day, with over 140 students taking part, and everyone had an enjoyable time. We look forward to continuing this tradition with our Future Leaders class in 2026.

Senior Girls Soccer Leinster Shield final winners

On Thursday 8th of May our Senior girls made the trip to Newbridge to face Dunshaughlin in the Leinster Senior Shield final. Following on from convincing wins over Greystones and Portlaoise in the knock out stages, confidence was high going into the final. The game was played under glorious sunshine and conditions were ideal for good football.

This group of girls have been playing together all through their years in school and the understanding between players and the link up play and passing patterns were a joy to watch immediately from kick off. We showed great control from the outset and created several early chances but could not find the finishing touch, thanks in large part to the excellent performance of the Dunshaughlin goalkeeper. Finally the breakthrough came in the 32nd minute of the first half when Laura Hogan broke down the right wing and got a crucial touch on the ball as the goalkeeper came out and collided with her leading to a penalty kick. Our captain Ella Carey stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom right corner. Half Time 1-0.

The second half started as we had finished the first with excellent movement and passing on display. Fortunately our second goal came shortly after kick off when Lucy Moloney got on the end of a cross from Mya Steele and finished to the net. To the credit of Dunshaughlin, they never let their heads drop and continued to cause us some issues on the counter attack. We were thankful for the pace and game reading of our defenders, especially Sheoladh Cunningham Dynan and Aoife Moore who made several vital tackles and interceptions and a couple of excellent saves from Grace Mulrooney in goals.

We kept pressing and sealed our victory when Lucy Moloney found the net for her second goal in the 22nd minute of the half. We made a few positional changes at this point and really pushed forward. This resulted in 2 goals in 2 minutes from Amber De Lewis. The first was a calm finish from close range following a good save from the Dunshaughlin goalkeeper, but her second goal was a spectacular volley from outside the box that lobbed the goalkeeper before landing into the top corner.

At the final whistle there were great scenes of celebration. Jim Halpin from FAI schools was on hand to present the Shield and medals to the Ella and the rest of our squad.

This game marked the last game in the black and red of Coláiste Phobal for our 6th year girls who have been exceptional throughout their time representing the school. We wish them all the best as they leave us and we are sure they have bright futures ahead both on and off the soccer pitch.
