Cycle to Work in memory of Mr. O’ Shea
Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré’s annual cycle to school in memory of former colleague Mick O’Shea took place on Wednesday May 28th. This year the proceeds raised were donated to Milford Hospice. A total of 24 staff set off from Dunkerrin at 7:30am to make the trip into Roscrea with number of support vehicles also present. Upon arrival the School Food Company provided a complimentary breakfast so all monies raised could go to Milford Hospice. A whopping total of €1,370 was raised. Thank you to everyone for participating, making it such an enjoyable morning and to all who made donations.

Fantastic Performances from Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré Students at Schools’ Track and Field All-Ireland Finals
The annual Schools’ Track and Field All-Ireland Finals took place at the Tullamore Harriers AC grounds on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st May. Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré was proudly represented by Marie Shanahan in the Intermediate Girls’ discus and hammer, and Kailum O’Meara in the Junior Boys’ long jump.
The discus event was fiercely contested, with the medal positions changing hands right up to the final round. Marie was in superb form, giving a tremendous performance to secure the silver medal. Despite strong, gusty headwinds that varied throughout the competition, Marie remained composed and consistent.
Her opening throw of 30.83m placed her in second place, and she improved with each of her next two attempts (32.44m and 34.70m). However, by the end of round three, she had slipped into third place. As one of the top six competitors, she qualified for two additional attempts. Locked in a close battle with her long-standing rival Méabh O’Connell from St. Angela’s, Cork, Marie responded with a brilliant fourth-round effort of 37.02m—but Méabh narrowly held onto second place.
With nerves of steel, Marie stepped up for her final attempt and delivered an outstanding throw of 40.10m—shattering her personal best by almost 3 meters. Méabh responded with a fine throw of 37.25m, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Marie. Tara Laverty of Castleblaney College claimed gold, setting a new national record of 43.45m.
Earlier in the day, Marie also competed in the hammer event, finishing a strong sixth overall. Her series of throws—38.28m, 30.55m, 40.09m, 35.63m, and 39.65m—highlighted her consistency and determination across both disciplines. Her top mark of 40.09m reflected her continued growth as a versatile and talented thrower.
On Friday evening, Kailum O’Meara gave a composed and confident performance in the Junior Boys’ Long Jump, securing 8th place overall. His opening jump of 5.12m was his best on the evening. Unfortunately, he recorded a foul on his second attempt, but he fought back with a 4.94m effort in the third round, staying competitive against a strong field. In a field where centimeters separated places, Kailum’s performance demonstrates his talent and ambition as this is his consecutive schools All Ireland final. With continued dedication and experience, Kailum is well positioned to continue to perform at the highest level in the future.
Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré is immensely proud of both Kailum and Marie’s achievements on this prestigious stage. They consistently represent our school with dignity, determination, and a deep passion for sport—qualities that inspire our entire school community.
A huge thanks to Ms. Cleary for her guidance and support with our Athletics teams through the years – we are thrilled for Ms. Cleary to see her students doing so well on the weekend she retires from her wonderful teaching career here in the Coláiste.
