Badminton News

On the 28th of January, the four students who would represent their school and their County in the Munster championships headed for the University of Limerick. The atmosphere was electric with hundreds of other students from all over Munster participating in this tournament in their respective age groups. The team who represented Colaiste Phobal Roscrea in the Under 19 age group in Division 2 were Andrew Cullen, William Cummins, Evan Hassett and Jack Finnegan with Stephen Tierney as substitute. The day started off against Cork who were formidable opponents. Every game went down to the wire but Colaiste Phobal pulled off a sublime 4-2 victory. The next opponents were Kerry who were also beaten 4-2. The final game was against Clare, with Colaiste Phobal needing a 4-2 victory to secure a place in the All Ireland. Andrew Cullen and William Cummins won both of their singles, with William putting on an exhibition to give his team the momentum. The next two singles games were narrowly lost so it was 2-2 going into the final two doubles games. Andrew Cullen and Jack Finnegan were in total control of their game and won it in great style. Meanwhile on the court beside them, William Cummins and Evan Hassett were trailing 9-1. They took a moment to compose themselves before rallying to go into the break only 15-11 down. They came back after the break to dominate the game and win by ten points thus ensuring a place for Colaiste Phobal in the All-Ireland finals.

The Schools Badminton All-Ireland Finals will be held in Gormanston, Co. Meath on the 9th March 2016. Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré would like to take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck.
