Athletics News

As the academic year begins to wind down for many, the athletics season geared up another level with the running of the highly competitive boys East Munster Boys Track and Field Championships in Templemore on Thursday 10th of May. Once again, the Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré athletes acquitted themselves incredibly well. A tight knit squad of 15 athletes from the school produced astounding performances both individually and collectively.  Not all athletes were lucky enough to win but each and every member of the squad left everything they had on both track and field.

The minor 4 x 100m relay team of Kyle Bergin, Graham Dooley, Michael Fitzgerald and Ryan Moloney, in their first competitive team outing produced an amazing silver medal winning performance.  Graham Dooley also picked up a bronze medal in the minor boys’ long jump.

The junior 4 x 100m relay team of Kyle Dooley, Dayle O’Meara, Aaron Delahunty and Oisin Moloney went one better and secured gold by a considerable margin. Individual sprinting prowess was also shown by Dayle in winning bronze in the 100m and by Kyle securing gold at a canter in the 200m event.

Adam Dooley was imperious in the triple jump coming away with golds and narrowly missing out on gold in the long jump by the finest of margins.  Athletes Enda Moore, Mark Maloney, Simba Havatitye and Jamie Ryan put in hugely competitive performances in their individual events and were a credit to the school, but this was unfortunately not to be their day. Each showed enough to suggest that next season shows great promise. All medallists have now qualified to represent the school in the upcoming Munster Schools Track and Field Championships on Saturday 19th May in Castleisland, County Kerry.

Transition Year Students from Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré Visit ‘The Rhineland’

By: Kelly Feehan, Áine Gleeson, Lucy McHugh and Melissa Rossiter

On Tuesday 24th of April the transition year students from Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré, departed at 2.30am to ‘The Rhineland’. We landed in Frankfurt Airport at 10.00 a.m. bright eyed and bushy tailed! Our first port of call was ‘The Marksburg’. ‘The Marksburg’ is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed. After our visit to the castle we set off on a cruise on the river Rhine, where we took in the beautiful scenery of the Rhine Valley.

On Wednesday we departed our hotel for an action packed day at Phantasialand Theme Park. There we enjoyed the various rides such as The Black Mamba, The Colorado Adventure and the heart stopping Talocan.

Thursday took us to Cologne, the 4th largest city in Germany. Cologne Chocolate Museum was our first stop. Here we learned how chocolate is made and we were also given the opportunity to taste some delicious German chocolate! Next we visited Cologne Cathedral. The Gothic cathedral dominates the skyline of Cologne and is one of Germany’s most famous landmarks.  It is also one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic and Neo-Gothic architecture in the world. In the afternoon we ambled through the streets of Cologne for some retail therapy.

Everyone enjoyed their 3 fun packed days in ‘The Rhineland’. We would like to thank Ms Mulrooney for organising the trip and we would also like to thank Ms Mulrooney, Ms O Meara, Ms Cullen, Mr Haugh and Mr Mackey for giving so willingly of their free time and accompanying us on the trip. We really appreciated everything you all did for us.
