School News – 13 Oct 2023

Open Night

We hosted our annual school open night on Thursday 12th October 2023. We threw open our doors and welcomed 5th and 6th class students from the surrounding areas into our school, to get a sense of some of the wonderful work that goes on in our Coláiste. From practical demonstrations in the woodwork room, to experiments in the Science labs, live music showcases by our talented students, to display of the Cunningham Archive, unique to our school, it truly was a memorable evening, capped off with a talk by our principal, Jack Flynn. Admissions for 2024 are now open and we encourage anyone thinking of applying to do so soon, and if you have any queries, please contact us via our website www.cpr.ie or contact the school office directly on (0505)23939

Visiting Speaker on Apprenticeships

James Heffernan, Senior Training Advisor, Tipperary ETB made a visit to Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré on Wednesday last, October 5th to talk about apprenticeship opportunities. He gave presentations to the Fifth Year and Fifth Year LCA students and outlined that there are 73 different types of Apprenticeships now, including the 25 craft apprenticeship programmes. There has been a lot of development in the Apprenticeship area over the past seven to eight years and students and parents can see all of these apprenticeship opportunities at generationapprenticeship.ie or apprenticeship.ie and students can also make an appointment with Ms. Leyne or Mr. O’Brien to discuss these opportunities.  Mr. Heffernan was accompanied on his visit to Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré by Miriam Durack, who gave an overview of other Further Education and Training options available to students. The presentations were followed by lively questions and answers sessions.

Football

On Wednesday 11th of October our U15 football travelled to UL to play Millstreet CS from Cork. Despite the heavy rain before and throughout, both teams put on an impressive display of football.

After a tough start with Millstreet going a point up from throw in, our boys bounced back with a well worked team goal finished by Sean Moloughney-Doherty. Millstreet got on the attack again and got a goal on ten minutes which made it 1-1 to 1-0  in Millstreet’s favour. From our kick out Millstreet won the ball and slotted it over the bar. A few minutes after, Jack Walsh wins the breaking ball and slots it into the corner of the goal to put us up by two. Just before half time Jack Walsh stepped up to take a free and puts it over the bar. It’s 2-1 to 1-2 to Coláiste Phobal at half time.

Jayden Loughnane opens the second half with a lovely point but Millstreet reply with a point of their own. Michael Dooley scored a tricky point from a tight angle before Tomás Shanahan was brought down in the square resulting in a penalty slotted away by Jack Walsh to make it 2-1 for him and to make it 3-3 to 1-2. Millstreet reacted with a point of their own followed closely by a goal also. Jayden Loughnane won the ball and was pulled down for another penalty for Jack Walsh to make it his hat trick and to make it a tally of 3-2 for him and 4-5 for Roscrea. Roscrea survived an onslaught of pressure for the last 5 minutes, which included a head injury for Eoghan O’Donnell after he made a very brave save, but Coláiste held Millstreet out to win by two points. Jack spencer Ryan was very strong in the goals throughout the match. The final score was 4-5 to 4-3 to Coláiste Phobal. The referees man of the match was given to Mark Coonan.

Match report by TY Students Aaron O’Donoghue and Sean Maher for their GAA future Leaders programme.

Leaving Certificate Applied Class Trip

Our Ashford and Glenafelly Classes enjoyed a stay in Ballyhass Lakes Activity Centre, Mallow, Co Cork this week where they participated in a wide variety of activities such as high ropes, paddle-boarding and hiking. They learned a lot about teamwork and enjoyed themselves along the way.

Golf

We had a wonderful turn out of twenty two students who took part in our first golf outing of the year on Thursday 12th October. Big thanks to Roscrea Golf Club for allowing us use of the course for the morning and afternoon. The results on the day were simply outstanding and congrats and well done to all the boys who took part.
