SENIOR HURLING
On Wednesday the 20th of November, our Senior Hurlers travelled to Puckane to take on St. Annes, Killaloe in the Munster Quarter Final. Despite the poor weather in the days leading up to the game, both teams were treated to a perfect day for hurling, on a brilliant field for this time of the year.
The CPR boys started quickly, racing into a 4-point lead, all 4 scores coming from the hurl of Gearoid Maher – 2 from play and 2 from placed balls. St. Annes bounced back from the early deficit to score 1-1 without reply to leave the game level after 9 minutes. 2 goals in the space of 2-and-a-half minutes from Seamie Cleare and James Sampson put Coláiste Phobal back into the ascendency with 15 minutes on the clock. The two teams traded scores in the final 10 minutes, Sam Dooley scoring 3 points, 2 from play and 1 from a free and another Gearoid Maher white flag to help increase their lead. Matt Watkins in the Coláiste Phobal goal answered the call of his team, making two spectacular saves to help send the Coláiste boys into the break with a 2-8 to 1-4 lead.
After the break, the Coláiste Phobal boys started the half in the same vein as the first, scoring two early points, both from sharpshooter Gearoid Maher. The pace, physicality and skill of the St. Anne’s team really came to the fore after this quick CPR start, with the Banner men scoring 7 unanswered points to reduce the deficit to just 2 points with normal time drawing to a close. A Sam Dooley score from a miss-rose free gave the Coláiste boys a much needed 3-point cushion before 2 more St. Anne’s points. With tensions high, a well worked move on the sideline between Paul Dooley and Gearoid Maher, saw Maher fire over his 8th point of the day, cementing a hard-fought win over the Killaloe men.
The win fires CPR into a semi-final in the coming weeks. A massive thank you to Mr. Smyth and Mr. Sheedy for preparing the team and to Ms. Maher for taking the photos on the day
Irish Angus Beef Competition
Congratulations to two of our TY groups who have made it to the interview stage of the Irish Angus Beef competition this year. Both groups produced and uploaded an excellent three-minute video on each of their projects to get to this stage.
They thankfully have now been invited to Moorepark in Fermoy Co. Cork where they will be interviewed by Certified Irish Angus Producer Group, ABP and Kepak. This allows our students to gain interview experience while gaining knowledge on the Irish Angus cattle breed and to improve their communication skills.
The members of group 1 are Tim Cleary, Brian Oakley, Killian Meagher and Eoghan Sheedy. Group 2 members consist of Leah Harney, Roisin Maher, Emily Whyte and Marie Shanahan. Well done to all involved and best of luck in the interview process.
